The purpose of the paper was to review historical conditions and regional specifics pertaining to the establishment and activity of Societies to promote students’ physical development in Russia in the early XX сentury. The goal of the paper was to review historical conditions and regional specifics pertaining to the establishment and activity of Societies to promote students’ physical development in Russia in the early XX сentury. The article employs previous research on the topic (Zelikson E.Yu., Stolbov V.V., Finogenova L.A., Mel’nikova N.Yu., Goloshchapov B.T., Sunik A.B.). While working on the paper, mainly non-published documents found in the State archives of Pskov and Novgorod oblasts were analyzed. As a result, it was evidenced that the process of establishing organizations to promote physical development of young students was typical not only for capital cities but also for many provincial regions of Russia, including those of Northwestern Russia. Organizational and legal aspects for the foundation and registering of societies to promote physical development of young students have been studied. It has become evident that a considerable influence on the society formation was exercised by such public figures as Gottlieb A.G., Pulkherov N.I., Guebner V.I., et al. It has also been noted that the goals of the societies were not purely physical development but also moral evolvement of young students. In the early XX century Northwestern Russia witnessed a revival of interest in the issues of physical development of the younger generation, which led to the establishment of Societies to promote physical (corporal) education of children and young students. The goals of such societies were to promote not only physical but also moral development of schoolchildren.
